Havnar Arbeiðsmannafelag has more than 100 years of history, and on its 100th anniversary changed its name to Havnar Arbeiðarafelag (Havnar Arbeiðarafelag).
The history of Havnar Arbeiðsmannafelag is a story of vital rights that the workers in Tórshavn gradually gained through negotiations, demands, and strikes. It is also a story of how Tórshavn, over a century, developed into a modern capital in the North Atlantic.
In the following pages, you can read excerpts from the history of the union, which is also described in the book "Til Arbeiðis! Lív ella deyð!" by Helgi Eidesgaard and the movie "Stríðsmenn í Havn" by Uni Arge and Hans Petur Hansen.
